Should I tip on the pre-tax subtotal or on the total with tax?

The conventional answer is pre-tax. Tax is paid to the state, not to the server, and tipping on the post-tax total inflates your tip by a few percent for no service-quality reason. Some auto-tip systems calculate on the total — they're working in their own favour, not yours.

How much should I tip a server in the US?

18–20% is standard for adequate service. 25%+ for excellent. Tipping below 15% is a deliberate signal of dissatisfaction. The US Federal sub-minimum wage for tipped workers ($2.13/hr) makes tipping financially essential for servers in most states; "I don't believe in tipping" generally means "I'm happy to underpay this worker."

Do I tip on the discount or on the original bill?

On the original (pre-discount) bill amount. A coupon or restaurant.com voucher subsidises your meal — the server's work was the same as if you paid full price.

How do I split a bill unevenly?
