Toolenza for Lawyers

Confidentiality is the feature

The one thing every lawyer needs from a software tool is the assurance that the client file does not leave their computer. Toolenza's PDF suite — redact, sign, fill, watermark, page-number, merge, split, edit, rotate, crop, metadata, flatten — runs entirely in your browser via pdf-lib.js. The privileged document is never uploaded to a server.

The three operations that do need a server (compress with Ghostscript, protect with qpdf, unlock a known-password file with qpdf) are clearly labelled. Files for those tabs are deleted as soon as your download starts.

What lawyers reach for

  • pdf-redact — drag black bars over privileged or PII content. The pixels are baked into the final file; underlying text is removed, not just visually covered (a common mistake with other tools).
  • pdf-sign — draw, type, or upload a signature; place it anywhere on the document. Browser-only.
  • pdf-fill — type into AcroForm fields. Useful for court forms.
  • pdf-protect + pdf-unlock — add or remove passwords (qpdf, server-side, deleted on download).
  • pdf-watermark + pdf-metadata — "DRAFT," "PRIVILEGED," or scrub title/author before sharing externally.
  • compare — diff two text documents (useful for contract red-lining).
  • days-between — exact day count between two dates. Court-rule deadlines ("answer due 21 days from service of summons") fit this; the full court-rules deadline computer with skip-weekends-and-holidays logic is on the roadmap.
  • multi-stopwatch — run a labelled stopwatch per matter; pause/resume across the day; CSV export at end of day for billing.
  • invoice — branded invoice with line items, hourly rates, retainer reconciliation.
  • mileage-tracker — log court appearances and client meetings; export for reimbursement.
  • id-validator — sanity-check ID numbers and tax IDs.
  • notary-locator — find a notary near a given address.
  • reminders — court date and filing deadlines.

Privacy specifics

  • PDF tools listed as "browser-only" use pdf-lib.js client-side. The file's bytes never reach Toolenza's servers.
  • Server-side tabs (compress, protect, unlock) hold the file on disk for the duration of the request and delete it as soon as your download begins. Logs do not retain file contents.
  • Toolenza is not a covered HIPAA business associate and isn't designed for medical-record handling, but for ordinary attorney-client document workflows the browser-only design covers the privilege concern.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Many \"redaction\" tools merely paint a black rectangle over text — the text is still extractable by any PDF viewer. The Toolenza redactor draws the rectangle AND removes the underlying text objects before saving, so the redacted content does not leak via text extraction or copy-paste.

For 14 of the 17 PDF tabs (edit, redact, sign, fill, merge, split, rotate, crop, watermark, page-numbers, metadata, flatten, PDF↔JPG), no. The three server-side tabs (compress, protect, unlock) are clearly labelled, hold the file only for the request, and delete it as soon as your download starts.

Yes — the multi-stopwatch tool runs an arbitrary number of labelled stopwatches simultaneously. Start/pause each per-matter, hit \"export CSV\" at the end of the day, paste into your billing software.

The days-between tool gives exact day counts (e.g. \"21 days from service of summons\"). The roadmap includes a smarter \"skip weekends and federal holidays\" deadline computer with jurisdiction-specific rule libraries. Open an issue if you want it sooner.

For the browser-only tools, yes — the file bytes do not leave your device. For the three server-side tabs, files are deleted as soon as your download starts and logs don't retain content; however, an attorney should always evaluate any third-party tool against their bar's own rules on cloud computing for client data.
